1. How can population change and migration affect the character of rural areas?
Rural areas can be accessible OR remote - we have to consider both.
Our examples:
1. Remote rural area - the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset.
2. Accessible rural area - Bayston Hill near Shrewsbury, Shropshire. (Look in the folder for the geofile on accessible rural areas.) - GIS MAP
For each example:
- What is the population structure and why?
- What impact has this had on the CHARACTER of the rural area?
Complete the table to summarise the changes
What does CHARACTER mean? you could consider changes to:
- age-structure
- wealth
- housing
- employment
- services
- the environment...

2. Urban Change...
Examine the effects of population change on the character of urban areas. - ADVICE HERE!
Poorer countries...
You can use your knowledge of GCSE urbanisation here - Rocinha in Rio de Janiero, but also make use of what you have already started to investigate in terms of overpopulation issues in Haiti...
Haiti, Port-au-Prince: (Pòtoprens in Kréyòl), population 1,277,000 (2006), is the capital and largest city of Haiti. Growth, especially in crowded slums in nearby plains and hillsides, has raised the population of the Port-au-Prince area to between 2.5 and 3 million people

Urban Change in richer countries
Link back to our work on the immigration of Polish workers - Slough as an example... NOTE there is a good summary of changes to urban areas of Slough and Boston, Lincolnshire in the GEOFACTSHEET you have.
You should dig out your work from Changing Urban Environments at GCSE too for urban change resulting from out migration - Inner City : London Docklands (watch) (summary) or Hulme Manchester or Coin Street area of London's South Bank.
Due to the decline in population there has been Inner City Improvement - Hulme, Manchester is an example of the government's City Challenge initiative. How Hulme used to look!
Hulme City Challenge. Hulme today.
Discuss how population change can affect the Character of Urban and Rural Areas - use this planning table to revise...
